Frequently Asked Questions About Web Proxies

Question: What are proxy sites and what do they do?
Answer:
They are for browsing anonymously. The word 'proxy' means 'on behalf of' and proxy sites fetch and display content from other websites on your behalf. This can hide your real whereabouts as the other websites only see the proxy. They can also be used for bypassing internet blocking filters too, the kind at schools and offices.

Question: Are they legal to use?
Answer:
Yes, at least in the "West", some countries don't allow them and do try to block their use though. Check with your local authorities if you're not sure.

Question: How do I use them?
Answer:
Find your proxy, then type your web address (url) into the browse bar and click 'Surf' or 'Browse' or 'Go' or whatever the button's called (it varies).

Question: How safe are they?
Answer:
Safe enough usually. Some websites visited without proxies can be dangerous, so using a proxy isn't usually any less safe and can actually be safer in fact. Most (but not all) proxies block scripts by default, malicious or otherwise.

Question: Can I visit any website with a proxy?
Answer:
Yes of course, not all websites will work through a proxy but most do. Some proxies work better than others so you might want to try several to see what works best for you.

Question: Are there any websites I shouldn't browse through a proxy?
Answer:
Yes. You shouldn't visit any personal, financial, credit or shopping sites with them. Some websites need to know it's really you and proxies will hide your identity, this can cause problems. You shouldn't enter any personal details into any website through a proxy either, just to be on the safe side.

Question: I've been banned from a website, can I use a proxy to go there again?
Answer:
In theory maybe, but if you were banned once you'll most likely be banned again. These things are done for a reason. If you're not wanted there for whatever reason, then get over it and move on.

Question: Can anyone see the websites I browse through a proxy?
Answer:
The proxy owner might if log files are kept, but the 'History' tab on your computer will usually just show the proxy web address, not any sites visited through it as they're usually encoded. That means anyone looking at your computer won't be able to see what you've looked at.

Question: Will my partner find out if I've been browsing 'inappropriate' websites?
Answer:
If you don't use a proxy then maybe, yes. If you use a proxy then no, unless you tell him/her. It won't be obvious from your computers log files if you use proxies.

Question: Can I be caught?
Answer:
For what? If you've not done anything illegal (in your area/country) then no, not normally. If you've done something criminal then maybe, yes. It depends if any crime has been investigated and if log files are requested. You can be caught for criminal activity whether you use a proxy or not, so don't rely on hiding behind one if you want to commit a crime.

Question: Can I unblock sites at work or school?
Answer:
Probably yes. Proxies are advertised to do such things but you shouldn't do it when you should be working or studying, save it for break times. If you're caught by your employer or principal then you can still get into trouble. Proxies won't prevent detection, they only bypass filters.

Question: Why do some proxies work but not others?
Answer:
It depends where you are. Some proxy owners block access to certain countries, others don't. Some proxies may be experiencing server problems. Just keep trying until you find ones that work for you.

Question: I've found a site listed here that isn't a proxy, what should I do?
Answer:
Use the Contact link (below) and tell me which one it is. It will be removed if it isn't a proxy. Then try a different link to find a proxy to use.

Question: Can anyone make a proxy?
Answer:
Yes, it's not difficult. You can find out how by doing a web search.

Question: Where's the proxies with numbers?
Answer:
We don't do those. They're 'socks' proxies and you need to change computer settings for those to work. We only list web proxies here. Use your favorite search engine if you want socks proxies.

Question: I have a question that's not here, what can I do?
Answer:
You can do a web search. I've only listed the most asked questions but they'll be many more. Just use your favorite search engine and have a look for yourself, there are many websites with answers.
